Our Research & Initiatives

The Zhang Lab at Fairfield University explores the fundamental principles of material and physical chemistry with a focus on how molecular structures influence charge transport and chemical reactivity at the nanoscale. By integrating concepts from quantum chemistry, molecular electronics, and catalysis, the group designs and studies molecular systems that convert electrical energy into chemical transformations using Scanning Tunneling Microscopic Break-Junction. Through a combination of molecular design, spectroscopy, and nano fabrication, the lab aims to uncover structure–function relationships that guide the design of next-generation materials for energy conversion, molecular sensing, and nanoscale catalysis. Our work sits at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and materials science, providing rich opportunities for undergraduate researchers to engage in hands-on, interdisciplinary research.
